a gardening diary from a small plot with heavy clay

About Muddy Boots

I started this diary in 2021, the spring we moved into a house with a long, neglected back garden full of brambles, bindweed and a broken shed. Five years later there are vegetables where the brambles were, and the shed has a new roof.

The plot

  • Size: about 120 m², south-west facing
  • Soil: heavy clay, slowly improving with a lot of compost
  • Climate: continental, hardiness zone 6b, last frost mid-May
  • Infrastructure: six raised beds, a 3×2 m greenhouse, three compost bays, a small wildlife pond
  • Philosophy: no-dig where possible, no pesticides, lots of mulch

Why write it down?

Because I forget everything. When did I sow the leeks last year? Which tomato split in the rain? The diary remembers so I do not have to. If it helps someone else along the way, even better.

Comments are moderated, usually on Sunday evenings after the watering is done.
